Other Activities

The emphasis is on relaxation and discovery, and on any free day there are many other things to entertain you, but do not expect wind surfing and jet skis, this is Amorgos not Corfu. The sea here is some of the clearest water in the world so the swimming and snorkelling is fantastic. There are a few hire cars available and we can also arrange a minibus tour of the island for you. We have a boat that we can use to whizz you out to uninhabited islands for the day if you feel that even life on Amorgos is too much for you. Barbecues and picnics can also be arranged through us.

You cannot exactly go on a shopping spree on Amorgos but a visit to one of the few delightfully chaotic shops is well worth while. They are amazingly well stocked with everything from olive oil to Christmas Crackers (yes even in the summer) and local wine to phone cards.

In the menu on the left side you can check on the weather today and to get an idea of the seasonal changes. The area around Amorgos is unique in the Aegean. It is unlike Crete to the south, the Mainland to the West and Rhodes and Turkey to the East. From May through to October rainfall is practically unknown on the island . However, the high mountains sometime result in a little cloud in the mornings, this gives us ideal walking conditions. Also in the summer the northerly meltemi wind blows which also helps to keep us cool, particularly up on the tracks in the mountains.

The History Course (5BC – 5AD) involves revealing centuries of history on the island. Recycled remains can be seen amongst the houses in the villages and near donkey tracks which were built as long ago as 5BC. Henri Delahunt-Rimmer has been researching the history of the island for many years and is an expert on the predominant periods involving the three ancient cities that can be found on Amorgos. She knows of the location of many special remains which have become lost or forgotten in time. We guarantee most visitors to the island never get to see some of these classics.

We will visit the three ancient cities that were first inhabited between the 3rd and 5th century BC. At the archaeological site of Minoa Henri will help you to explore the excavations of the palace of King Minoa and the temple of Delphi where part of the statue remains. You can even sit on a 5th century BC loo there with the drainage system still intact. The Amphitheatre where plays were re-enacted at the festival of Dionysus can still be seen. You will discover chapels in the middle of nowhere, which have evidence of 5BC remains, Venetian repairs, and Byzantine icons all under the same roof. You will see 4th Century AD watch towers you may even help to find two that are missing. We know their location but are still looking for evidence of them. These, and caves set high up on cliff sides are from the times when Amorgos was plagued by pirates.

If you know where to look the whole island is rich with history. Buildings, churches and farmland on closer inspection reveal the secrets of the islanders centuries ago, many traditions of which still remain. The more intrepid clients may wish to go snorkelling by the uninhabited island of Nikuria and discover the underwater city and find many ancient pots and jars. You may even come across some coins from the mint that used to be there. We can only show you the ‘tip of the iceberg’ the rest is up to you.
